Gulls In Space

by MichaelFirewalker

she spins her light through inky space,
this mother who is Earth…

all about her, bizarre stars and fat planets sweep salute,
as she lays back, a great relaxed, sentient being…

who is every bit as easy birthing rangelands swept
with grasses bent beneath her virgin trees…

trees she rolls out like dotted forest carpets,
sparkling them with kisses
from her serious bees…

but here on her sea, ocean time continuously rebirths itself
from the handsome shoreline of her ocean throat…

she holds her wet mouth wide, growling a titanic roar,
like a hundred thousand Harleys rumblin’,
shimmy-shakin’ down along her long, long shore…

everything around trembles with her massive surround-sound…

here, on her drenched sand, light stitches the zig-zag
fringe of her shore hemline, and a storm snaps, rips it inland,
in a thick barrage of beaten cream, further hardening the miles
on cold miles of rough shore aggregate, as unforgiving mean
and old as salted time

become meaningless here, where her gulls reel, careen,
caress the wind with pointed beaks that earth sticks up to prick
the underbellied slosh where nimbus broods
in cumulus, pressing more intoxication
into already drunken sands.

and here, sometimes, time stands
to honor life in passing white and gray,

to watch it flash its perfect stripes,

as one by one, her gulls land,
feed their grounded young, their junior speckles
spotted by sprinkles from a golden sun
lain down on feathers grown pinto brown.

with muffled screams, they hunker behind dunes
of high stacked sand…

as ruffled feathers dance to soften blows from ice
pretending to be air,

blows that whip and rip and tear,

strip away the layers of well-oiled feather care,

exposing gull skin.

that's when time disappears with every year that passes here…

on each cycled turn,
a few will lose
the fragile spell
of life so fiercely held
by all that yearn to return
to time lost,
and once again
forgotten…
