but nurses have to get the order right every time, or people die. if waitresses get the order wrong, then someone just gets an overdone burger - nursing a hangover - paul.

For a poem of three lines, you really captured it all: all the tension, all the stress, all the demands to do everything just the right way, every single time. Unlike a waitress mixing up an order, however... well, I can only imagine what would come next in this poem - it doesn't even need to be written, but the feeling's already there.

Nursing is feeling like a waitress while you are responsible for people's lives. You get none of the respect most of the time and are often treated like a waitress. That is the most basic point of these two poems.

I have to ask - what's wrong with society? Why has it become acceptable to be rude to people just because they're "serving" us?

I heard that in Russia the doctors are treated in the same way. Is this true?

Not at all. Doctors in Russia are very well respected. Not that it's your fault, but it sometimes amazes me just how incredibly wrong Americans' perceptions about Russia are.

Not really. Not only are American TV shows and movies shown in Russia quite frequently (as "accurate" as they are about American life), but Russians generally are aware about what goes on outside of their country's own borders. America, on the other hand, exports everything but imports very little, despite the fact that it's a country of immigrants. When's the last time you watched a Russian film on TV? Turned on the radio and heard a Russian song? Went to the bookstore and found a book by a Russian author from later than the end of the 19th century?
Russians are much more in tune with what's going on in the United States than Americans are with what's going on in Russia, simply because Americans have next to no exposure about what's going on in Russia. Practically the only things Americans hear about Russia are things that go catastrophically wrong, and so Americans tend to think that everything in Russia is going catastrophically wrong.

Personally, I believe that Americans are so ethnocentric that they have little idea of what is going on ANYWHERE except here! Even Hawaii is considered exotic and we know nothing of the culture there. We know there are great hotels and the ocean is beautiful. I try hard to be more worldly and educated than the most. Hopefully, I succeed a bit.

It certainly does take some effort to open one's eyes and take in the world that surrounds us, but, in my opinion, it's well worth it!

I wouldn't say we don't import. I can't recall the last object I saw that wasn't made in China. I liked this poem, though, paricularly the line "feels like a waitress on fire"
