Poems - A Red Balloon
| | A Red Balloonby bigbadwolf
I remember that day in the summer
They had posted signs up all over town
The circus was coming, we were to be amazed
Animals of all shapes, big and little clowns
It seemed as though the whole town showed
For the only world existed under the tent that day
As children, we looked on in sheer delight
Memories that we could carry away
But what my sister and I valued most
Was a single red balloon each of us got
Wrapping mine around my hand
We were too young to know about knots
Out into the evening breeze we were carried
My sister's hand could no longer hold the string
Off into the distance the red dot climbed
Watching for a few more seconds and then nothing
I gave my sister my red balloon to share
As she sat on our fathers shoulders
I reached up to hold her little hand
I love my little sister, she would not float away

Thank you Conor. It was just a slip of the pen. After losing one red balloon, it was a big brother's way of holding onto his sister so she did not float away. It was his way of protecting her in his eyes.

Oh what a sweet poem! I love the natural protectiveness shown for the little sister AND the generosity in sharing your balloon! Perhaps to ward of an outburst of tears? Great scene depicted! J.
(PS just a nitpick..if you are the older "bigger" sibling, wouldn't you reach down for her hand rather than up? Just curious)

Such a wonderful trip back to county fairs and traveling carnevals... ah, the sweetness of your childhood memory rivals cotton candy at the fair. Cheers, Mary Ann

Having two younger sisters myself, I loved your take on the Big Brother mindset. It struck home for me... Really really enjoyed this, friend. Quite deserving of the 10 and the heart. Well composed, Wolf!
