Lightening Bolt a Horse

by wolfinwindow

The fastest horse alive he was
and Lightening Bolt his name.
From stand still to a gallop,
surging muscles were his fame.

It was the Civil war between the states,
when a horse was a soldier, too,
that he proved his name , became legend
and showed he was true blue.

Troop B was trapped and needed help,
one boy was spared and he was scared.
He laid on Lightening Bolt, becoming one,
as they race through unimpaired.

Through the deadly gauntlet,
to the fort at top speed.
They raced for miles unimpeded,
the boy and his trusty steed.

Arrows wafting, zinging past,
gunsmoke filled the very air,
but Lightening Bolt went faster still,
he and his rider, a wild ride did share.

They sped up as they neared the gate,
an extrordinary burst of speed he gave.
He was heaving,lathered and exhausted,
but the troop B, they were saved.

The cavalry gathered altogether
and circled and whooped the indian band.
While back at the fort, Lightening Bolt,
was being curried by a very greatful hand.

magnificent storytelling, I should like to have read something of an admonishment of lightning bolt for his bravery and courage by troop B at the end of the poem, rather than just being curried by a good hand.

still, the story was in wonderful verse, a fantastic effort.

A nice heroic ballad Linda rising from the tragedy of war.
Thank you Linda.
