Poems - It Is What It Is

It Is What It Is

Tim
in a restaurant one day
with his son.

Woman in the corner
sitting alone -
Tim says
“Come on over.
Join us.”

Her suspicion was on vacation that day
and she did.

He made the standard offer
- “If you are ever in Massachusetts,
look us up.”

What do you know?
She did

and spent a week
with Tim and his family
having fun.

They’re still friends.

“What does a silly story
about Mustache Barney
and his friends
have to do with justice
or anything important
in this hardscrabble world?”

the serious reader might ask.

Looking just over his head
as if I could grasp some dark truth
about human nature
only poets can see
I might say,
quite mysteriously,

“It is what it is.”
