Poems - Goodnight Moon, Midnight Rune
| | Goodnight Moon, Midnight Runeby deadalchemist
Is it the morning or just late at night,
So hard to tell anymore...
With half a bottle of Jack
And a full bottle of V,
Should I drink or should I sleep?
Hydrocodone in the drawer
Or should I leave it alone
And let myself slip into dreamland
Unaided and weak?
I'd rather be unattended
At half past one,
Waiting for the morning
The one that I do not want to come.
What shall happen tomorrow (but today)
When it's time to face the world again
And man up to my mistakes -
The ones I knew I should not have made.
The smell of something beneath my sheets
Could not put me to sleep and nor will
The aging thoughts of sheep.
What will push me to slumber tonight
When staying awake feel so good
Except when there's nothing to do
But ponder upon the grass that spreads
Across a land where my sheep must roam
And a cow jumps over the Moon.
There is no old lady whispering hush
Or the boy that used to make me blush
(Thought about calling him)
As I try to fall asleep tonight,
Just the crickets chirping about their business,
What I should be doing,
When instead I wait for a moment
For the headache to subside and the nerves to calm,
All on their own with no help from the bar.
I wont have to curl my hair in the morning
From the thoughts that crawl up my spine -
And as I lay in this bed ready to fall,
I just know that tomorrow will be fine.

Your poem is so vivid and full of emotion, Stef....
the night takes over and every vulnerability is
entirely exposed. I'm sure many readers
will relate to your experiences.
Loved the positive, uplifting ending -
Best wishes, Mary Ann

I'm so flattered. Apparently you hate my poetry and want me to stop but yet you keep coming back for more, and READ it no less! Do you have to keep posting anonymously? Too embarrassed to let me know who you are (lol as if I don't already know)? As long as you continue to cower behind your computer monitor, I will keep writing poetry that you do not like. If you got laid you wouldn't be wasting your time here. I look forward to your future comments with sincere interest.

... And along comes Anon to post another asinine comment. No poem is complete without the necessary infraction of stupidity and ignorance presented by the shallow of the world.

you weave this maddening tale well..finishing with a hint of optimism worked well in my opinion...going through the motions and having enough left over to see the gift of a new day..good one..qaj

a sort of lullaby for insomniacs - an old sheep who can still just about jump over the moon. Bbhaaaaaaaa! love the line " but ponder upon the grass that spreads " - you know who.

As I was reading this, Stef, I was just thinking (with one of those sad but knowing grins): "Been there, done that, all too often". This reminds me of the old Biblical proverb: "And this too shall pass". No matter how difficult the situation or how harsh the pain, just remember that it will fade with time and the coming of a new dawn.
Of course, sometimes we feel like others just can't understand or grasp what we're going through -- even though you're not alone sometimes you feel like it. For me, I reach for the twelve pack of beer, for others they reach for JD and still others greater distractions. I'll be the first to admit that although I guess you could say I have a hefty beer-drinking issue going on (which I'm certain I'll have to one day confront) -- it's only a distraction from what is confronting us and not an answer. There is another morning, another day, just around the corner.
Be well, my friend.

I love that feeling of mundaneness that you have captured in this poem Stef.......I can see Camus screaming about the absurd......Sisyphus rolling his rock.
