Honey, Filters On A Cigarette Are Like Training Wheels On A Bicycle

Honey, Filters On A Cigarette Are Like Training Wheels On A Bicycle

5 September 2010

She takes the bar stool beside me,
pulls a menthol from her purse,
and orders a Mojito from the bartender.
Here I'm awash in my own beer mug's reflection.
No contemplation except my own considerations.
She's never been in the bar before,
and I nod in knowing this before she speaks it.

She talks about lost love and I just grin,
it's not a nasty grin, mind you, but one of knowing.
She speaks of her loneliness and sadness,
and I can't help but laugh,
as she says she's been alone for two weeks now.
Some folks seem to eternally need another.
Just like I need the next beer from the Pabst tap.

She has a sweet Carolina brogue,
a pleasant Southerner's disposition,
as we sit listening to Merle Haggard,
in the cool bar's noon sunlight.
Just this Carolina girl and my stained mug's reflection.
Her menthol's ashes cake the cracked ash tray.

We get to gabbin' about our lives,
eating the cashews from the bowl in front of us,
when she asks if I could help her with her sheets tonight.
She's a good looking brunette, with a smile for life,
but I guess the 30 year age of my expanding crow's feet,
burns a fiery fire into the heart of me.

I light her up a non-filtered cigarette,
as we sit in this afternoon glow of Budweiser lights,
and tell her if five years younger, I'd partake of her offer.
Meaning no offense to this pretty darlin' before me,
I just shake my head and say this here pub is home.
I've been down way too many dead end roads,
to want to journey again the burning path she's offering me.

In the wee bit of wisdom I've attained,
I know she'll never come strolling into the pub again,
whether I accept her offer or refrain,
this bar really is a man's domain for much more than drinking.
"Honey", my voice cracks, as she slightly burns her fingers,
trying to smoke the end of my non-filtered cigarette.

As welcoming as I'm sure her arms are,
her sheets are no more my home,
than this pub's grease-stained neon lights,
are her anchors from her last relationship's storms.
We both hold a different fire in our hearts and hands.

As the evening progresses and she starts flirting around,
now well lit-up drunk and no doubt temporarily hurting,
I contemplate how this non-filtered cigarette's burning end,
and the burning of holding her heart between her sheets,
really give voice to one and the same meaning.

Honey, filters on a cigarette are like training wheels on a bicycle,
and my falling into your arms would be like a parachute on a parakeet.
There just wouldn't be any love lasting from your embrace,
no more than could you find the great love I have,
from this old bar's soul-filled grace.

For All the Lonely Souls

Lil: It takes a great poet to recognize another great poet. You certainly have great talent and amazing imagery yourself -- I'll have to check out some of your more recent work.

Menthol: YUCK! How anyone can smoke cigarettes that work as glass shards for the lungs blows my mind. Nasty damn things they are -- and my old saying for dating works its way into this: "Never date a girl who smokes menthols, you can't trust her".

I'll lift my mug up to this in a "Salut!" with you, Harry. I appreciate your coming by to read and comment, my friend. I need to check out some of your newer work as you've been quite active recently (which is a great thing for us here at GP land as we can all appreciate your great work before the madness of the syphilis finally takes its toll on you Very Happy ).
