Sheep and Goats - 4 (end)

When the siren sounded, I had a look over my shoulder;
not one right hand raised in any of the other cages,
heads bowed in brave, but direful silence.
When Jewels started sobbing, I took her by the hand,
told her to hold her head high,
that she was strong,

She whispered in my ear that she wanted to die by my side;
I forced a smile and wiped mascara tears from her cheeks,
I said, We’d probably get separated.
Ha! You should’ve been there to see her eyes
when I raised her right hand,
the poor woman.

Dreams are only real when they’re shattered, I tried to explain,
but I could see that my philosophy had been lost on her;
a fly landed in the corner of her mouth.
A rusted key rattled in the cage lock,
and they dragged her away
like a heavy statue.

Jewels had been my first assignment, and an important one at that;
she set me up for the rest of my sorry existence—
I’m not proud of what I do, but the kids have to eat.
Jewels ‘infoes’ me now and again,
says I was right about dreams,
and their shattered state.
