Pirate Dreams (sonnet)

Late at night when I'm lying awake
and sleep becomes a stranger to me
I like to go down and sit by the lake
where the night air let's my soul sail so free.
I watch the waves as hey rush to the shore
wonder what treasures they will leave behind,
seashells, fossils, gold from days of yore
when pirates stole whatever they could find.
I wonder what treasures still linger there
from bounties lost when ships were sunken.
Those days of pirates and maidens fair
and heroes whose hearts the maidens did win.
The waves sing to me from waters so deep
a lullaby that sends me off to sleep.
