Barely Half a Heart

by maryanns

With barely half my heart I roamed
and paid the price of rising storms
with streams of salty, scalding tears.
No one could tell me I was wrong;
I ran away from life itself it seemed
beyond the pain, beyond the stream
of wretchedness in dreams.

I sought the truth and found the lies
that permeate the nether world
where life is death and black is white
and reason dies at every turn.

I tried their rusting rollercoaster ride
beyond the bend though I survived
to see their grinning carousel of spies
come screaming, spinning after me.
My feet got caught in spokes of mud
what should I do, what do you want?
I only touched it incidentally…

I sank in shock, amazed by bitter rage
that couldn’t reach me in the maze.
While life goes on in mesmerizing fog
my soul itself dissolved; it broke apart
to match my shattered, alabaster heart.
I turned to stone. I stare at plaster walls
and smile a Mona Lisa smile.

Sounds like a hell of a ride.

Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa
Men have named you
You're so like the lady with the mystic smile
Is it only cause you're lonely
They have blamed you
For that Mona Lisa strangeness in your smile

Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there, and they die there
Are you warm, are you real, Mona Lisa
Or just a cold and lonely, lovely work of art. I thought I would sing it for you Smile

I've been on one of those rides myself. One of those rides that go round and round, setting in a seat looking at the chains that binds the rider to the ride, and life questions the strength of the chain's weakest link. What is the weakest link in our lives? The one that gives up. Mary Ann your words make a beautiful poet. BWP... James...

I love the depth in this piece that is filled with ambiguity. There is a fine line between th nature, of us, the nature of the world, and the teachings of it...to our 'human heart.' We are always stuck in the depths, permeated through the airs...as silence is inverted...whiteness is blackness...and madness is rage, trying to find answers that stick us to life in a deeper level....we are part of it. Life goes on, even when 'spies' attack us...and the maze pivots around us..grabbing us to its level and answer. Very Happy I read this at three o'clock am..yesterday too...decided to comment...teeheehee..there is symbolic, philosophical truth in this poem that almost makes me hurt. I don't know why, but my muse is like a puppet of my heart especially when I'm tired...because the words are actually the puppet. - I find it somehow intoxicating to feel that muse offer me such ideas, especially in the depths of midnight...my shriveled heart is replaced by an utter thrill...never let the fleeting hours be forgotten..or the midnight hours. - Something is somewhat entrancingly euphoric...during a later night....the stars are singers playing their musicality.... and I feel that....

there is a madness in the world...

but it comes from our greed first...

that greed flourishes during an excessive hatred...

that comes when we can't stop being greedy...

and mad creatures of complete, utter defiance.

        GP has madness...

        but everything does through symbolism...

        even through the brightest eyes...

ambiguity lies in everything I feel. Smile

the ambiguity in an alarm clock..- the sheer notion of it waking you up to a bad night..or morning...almost programmed...because of the wakening that it 'offers' you. Wink yet it wakes you up..so it helps. Wink
