Scarecrow, for Matthew

by kylebank

wrists lashed to the barbed wire fence,
body laid bare, crumpled beneath.

face swollen, eyes screamed shut,
nostrils and lips caked
with blood, bits of bunchgrass,
the red Wyoming soil.

his feet point towards town,
the university, the tall boys with
wild eyes and strong backs that you cannot touch.

do not touch.

his face is bent to the horizon,
a jag of iron hills scratched between yellow
forkroot and the blue maw of autumn sky.

his hands are bound with white cord,
raw fingers reaching to heaven.

this is an excellent couple of lines, and the word choice is superb:

a jag of iron hills scratched between yellow
forkroot and the blue maw of autumn sky.

Excellent work - I love the way the first and last lines hint at the crucifixion, and the choice of words is just perfect.

your poem is tragic and achingly beautiful, just like Matthew was...well done, this is going into my faves

thanks wordsmith! Matthew Shepard's story is powerful, and has had a profound effect on my life recently. For a whole week I dreamed about him, that I saw him there, on the fence, and had to get it out.

I like the hinting towards being sickened, destructed, and blown to death itself where you reach towards the 'pinning' of his prior-death-stage. Sad...sad...sad...we reach out.

his feet point towards town,
the university, the tall boys with
wild eyes and strong backs that you cannot touch.

this seems like the logical end of the poem; everything after
almost irrelevant in the face of such a strong stanza.

This is a compliment.

I agree Cattu. I think that seems like the ending.
