Poems - Time to Get off the Grog
| | Time to Get off the Grogby liarbird
There can be amounts of trauma in the years of middle age,
That amounts to mending lifestyle from a desperado rage,
Where the demons make a calling for an alcoholic stage,
When the need is for a calming voice, conversing as a sage.
Alcohol becomes a partner that intends to want to bind
The urge to share this comfort ‘til it’s lovers sick and blind,
Yet there’s not a rule to stop it when a bottle’s there to find,
And it wears a leering grin when playing tricks upon the mind.
Hiding bottles in the cupboards and forgetting they are there,
The centre of attention, being loud and crudely swear,
Always looking for support but still falling off a chair,
And getting ‘round the house in some holy underwear.
Speaking out with gibber that defies all common sense,
Making sure a party mood will drift to being tense
By bringing up a subject that connects to arguments,
And no resolve permitting, to sitting on the fence.
Looking in the mirror and complaining ‘bout the weight,
So the table’s getting barer and there’s much less on a plate,
But the body won’t give in, it refuses to deflate
Could it be what’s in the liquid, not something that is ate!
The puffing and the wheezing yearns for exercise at least,
So it’s a must to hide the opener in attempt to kill the beast,
Then try to resurrect the past, that from the mind is fleeced,
That includes a love life that for years has been deceased.
When temperance fills the cupboard and the night is fully boring,
The hunger for a wee dram quickens up to certain warring,
For if the partner takes a stand and their plea heads to ignoring,
The fanatic in withdrawal retaliates with raucous snoring.
But once the cork pops off a bottle there’s a guzzling greedy hog,
Followed by the rudeness of the common bedroom frog,
And there’s repetition every breakfast of, a hair of the dog…
Don’t you reckon that in fairness, me wife should give away the grog!

Yes I've known them too mate. They hate to see beer in a glass, even at eight o'clock in the morning.
Thanks Harry

Thank you again for your encouraging comments mate. I know this poem comes across as humorous but the topic in reality is not funny at all for many.

Having been exposed to this phenomenum myself, I couldn't help but to applaud the poet who managed to expose it with such an entertaining choice of verse. Enjoyed the rolling cadence of this piece... maybe caused by the subject matter. I felt just like a sober, somewhat innocent bystander. I still recall the snoring, like it was just recently absorbed. Everything you say is right Mary Ann. This addiction has always been a subject for humour but by crikey when it's real it's a family disaster.
Thank you for your insight comment mary ann.

geeeeezzzz you got me right on with this one lindsay. i was actually having a drink at 7am when i read it.....maybe time to cut down on the grog at least......but as i sometimes say, the problem with not drinking, is that not drinking is very, very boring. i know i'm wrong, but sometimes the drink is all i've got. got me in the heart with this one mate - paul.

G'day Paul...
Crikey Paul, this wasn't aimed at you or anyone in particular.
It was meant to be punchline humour, but after reading your comment I reread the poem and it struck me that its all that funny at all.
Thanks again for reading Paul...and um...have one for me.
