Stone Up-Hill

by greygrynn

Ennui’s cold-dead hand clasp, tendons straining, around my heart
Trapping a bright burning soul in a dry brown prison of sand stone and clay

But had to pick up the quill one last time and
Scream every fiber of my being onto cadaver skin paper – It felt so good
Nub rubbing love – Sweet drag back as letters formed looping and swirling

Southeast of Denmark blue sky gave host to puffs of wispy smoke, starch linen
White clouds – but I could only see not feel the crisp/cool joy playing to a
Cement/chrome/glass edifice of a mind preoccupied with just getting thru

Words flailing/ failing/falling – Slamming dead to a rammed earth floor
As I stood next to the giants – My mortality came sharper into view
Saw how small I really was – But still, I had to write

My father came back to haunt for a while
Not sure what he’d think - But knew how it seemed to me

Little church in a 2000 large town Southwestern Michigan bound
No room – Packed shoulder to shoulder family/friends/others
He died not alone/Not a coward

Back then – Drove home very quiet
We didn’t have much to talk about – My brother and I
And so it goes – Chew the glass shards and pain alone

What’s the point of continuing to form stanzas
Unread/Unremarkable to literary experts real and pretend
Can’t write for them - Everyone has their own demons to embrace or hold

But No! – It’s the joy unseen/not yet felt
Hearts raw red from someone’s no-response or
Cold/unfeeling paving stone trapped in a perfect chest

They read the words – Salve wounds too deep/pain hot-cold
Pick up and move on – A little lighter knowing
Tomorrow always comes
