New York, New York

by maryanns

I watched you revel
far into the night
I heard your joyous voices
singing the national anthem
at the top of your hungry lungs.

Yes, I saw your happy faces
trying desperately to forget
the incredible tragedy
that befell Lower Manhattan…
the scar that will never heal
in spite of the ten year struggle
to find one individual man
a symbol of unfathomable pain
elusive yet always an inescapable
affront to your eight million people.

Your incredible skyline
may never look the same
but New York, New York
you will forever remember
the night the avengers came.

    Thank you so much, Ilan...
at first I was sickened by their actions,
celebrating the death of any man...
but upon further reflection and consideration
I believe, instead of reveling over death
most were overcome by a sense of closure
many New Yorkers thought would never come.

    An eight million person exhale...

Thanks again, Ilan. Best wishes, Mary Ann

I agree with Ilan, this poem is a piece that resonates with the somber destruction that shook the grounds of the World Trade Center, kicking the hearts of those who did laugh and play. Beautiful tribute, beautiful.

There, as you said it... somber.
I, just as many other Americans
would have preferred a deep sigh of relief
to what we saw televised... However,
we weren't present when the towers fell.

Thanks so much, Sammi - Mary Ann

Thank you, Ossy - I appreciate your view of this...
neither of us experienced their trauma first hand,
it was overwhelming to simply see the carnage
televised over and over again in 2001...
maybe the City of New York can now truly move on.

    Thanks again, Mary Ann

Thanks so much, Bonnie... I wrestled with the subject just like every other poet must have. Celebrating killing...
On the other hand, if he had been captured alive we'd never hear the end of it, would we? Thanks again, my friend. Mary Ann

I love the song... 'ol blue eyes, the old days of Broadway shows that play on forever. The Big Apple, Metropolis, the City That Never Sleeps... Awww, let 'um revel, get it all out of their system!
Love your accent, Paul - I detect Brooklyn or maybe Queens...
All the debris ended up in Joisey, eh? I hope the target's off everybody's sturdy backs!

    but some more than others.
Anywy, I suppose it was ok

The happy faces
It makes me wonder
About what kind of spell
The human race is under
This poem touched me
And touched me hard
Why don’t we just kill
Somebody and have a party
In our back yard
As usual I Love you and your poem too, Lew

What you said in your comments...
exactly the way I feel as well.
What were they thinking? But then
I see the towers in all sorts of films,
and it brings back the whole thing.

Very nice... I have been collecting things that showed the twin towers and one of the things I have is a Crystal with the twin towers inside.

Movies filmed in New York before always catch my eyes as a reminder of that day.

I remember right where I was standing when I heard the News and the second plane had not hit yet.

It is great the master mind has paid the price... BWP... James...

Thank you so much, James - pictures of the towers always bring the whole horrible thing back for me too... no matter what the film is about I'm only seeing one thing. You can almost date a film by the Lower Manhattan skyline....

Hey, I almost sent you a "crying on your shoulder" message this morning... but I couldn't even access gotpoetry's website to send it.
I didn't think my problems with gp could get any worse... no messages for over a month, no fix in sight and then I couldn't even log on! I don't know, but hopefully it won't happen again.
