stupid child

You will write the nighttime birds
Are sleeping

it is morning again.

Some impotent facts that
May only be a little true

Or so entirely true as to seem
Fibbing. You have to be a good
Marksman in either case.

Here’s one
from my quiver
to make you shiver

(the arrows bounce
with the terrain below my
memory. I can not recall
Who made them, from which
wood they were carved, but I have
named them after each prey that’s
eluded me)

I was illiterate until I was 12.
And I remember the violence
of seeing and understanding for the first time

a book called Frog and Toad.

Frog and Toad are friends,
You see.

And they came to my bed this morning
Like parents to an infirm child.

I did not ask for their presence.
I am not their sickly child.
