Testing the waters

by Ozymandias

The chance, which others baulk at, I shall take:
to dip a toe in age's dimming stream
and watch the ripple spreading in its wake
to wash against the shorelines of my dream.
The stones I no more see, that once I threw
in childish sport to skim across life's glaze;
the water's dark today, a mirror true
reflecting back my sadder, sterner gaze.
My flesh may shudder at the icy touch
of much-detested waters' cheerless clime,
yet by degrees I shall accustom much
myself to slowly creeping tides of time.

For each of us must sometime come this way
and seek to sink with grace at close of day.

I really liked how well it flowed, and that is one of my favorite rhyme schemes. That couplet at the end really pulled the whole thing together, though.
