Justice

Justice

The time has come and I’ve gotta leave town
I really didn’t mean for that kid to drown
But who would believe a no-good guy like me?
I’ve got no cash but I have to think fast
I grab my keys and I leave behind my past
Maybe the open road can let me be free

A very good buddy said, “Watch my son”
A couple hours passed, we were having fun
He made a mess, I told him, “You take a bath”
The minutes ticked past and the silence roared
I found him lying on the tub’s blood-red floor
On his face a smile like he wanted to laugh

“God, what could have happened?” I asked out loud
But no decent answer was there to be found
I just knew that I would have to take the blame
My heart’s beating like it will leave my chest
I never did study for this kind of test
I lit up a smoke and stared into the flame

I slam on the pedal, the tank’s half-low
I haven’t really got anywhere to go
Forget about home, that’s the first place they’ll look
With no place in mind I turn the car west
To quickly disappear now, that would be best
I can hear them all say, “Well, we told you so”

No one cares about technicality
They still all hate a common jailbird like me
There’s no redemption, no one ever forgives
My gas tank runs dry, I come to a stop
Right outside a local tavern, but it’s locked
Wish I could be the boy who no longer lives

Fear swallows my pride and I start to hitch
That drunk trucker quickly drives into a ditch
Jagged sheet metal just an inch from my face
My hand reaches down and it comes back red
That’s nature’s own justice, I will soon be dead
I think of that boy floating somewhere in space
