John Powers is a national performing poet, born in London England
currently residing in Providence Rhode
Island. He lost his accent long ago. After High School he joined a cult known as Bryant College, a
top rated business school in Smithfield Rhode
Island. After graduating in 1993 he moved back to Massachusetts
and joined another cult, known as the
business world. In 1998 he stumbled upon
a spoken word open mic hosted by Bill Macmillan and realized the mess he was
in. "Poetry saved my life, it
taught me to question everything and take nothing - at face value…" By day, John still resides in the business
world, but now sees himself as an insider.
"We need somebody looking out for the artists... Some say being a poet and a businessman
cancel each other out, I think their philosophy is over budget." By night, John is the founder and host of the
DownCity SLAM, a weekly poetry show on Thursday's at a bar called Nick-A-Nee's
in Providence. He also hosts a small reading called the
Moonstruck Poetry Café in Charlton Massachusetts, an
hour's drive from Providence. He is the founder of the CUPS performing
troop - a touring group of poets with an activist's point of view and is on the
organizing committee for the year 2000 Poetry Slam Nationals being held in Providence in
August. He regularly reads his work on
the AM 990 WALE - Power Bomb Rock radio show, he has performed, slammed, and
featured all over New England, New
York City, New
Jersey, and Washington DC. He was a member of the 1999 Providence Poetry
Slam team that competed in Chicago. This is his fifth book and first CD.
