The last thing I remember is going to the bathroom in the early morning hours. I awakened on the floor. I do not know how long I had been on the floor. I pulled myself to get back into bed, but had no strength. I could not raise myself into the bed. Sometimes my legs do become weak from the MS, but not like this. However, I did not feel particularly disturbed. I felt fine. I stared at the ceiling and thought. I don't remember what I thought about, just the fact that my arms and legs were not working seemed like a minor setback. After a while, I reallized that I should probably call someone and ask them to get me back into bed. My cell was on the bedside table, and it was low. I pulled myself with my arms over to the table, and mananged to knock the cell off so I could reach it. Calling my son, I asked him to stop by on the way to work to put my back in bed. Of course he asked what was going on, and I replied nothing, my MS is bad so I can't get into bed. Later I found out how irritated and annoyed he was to recieve such a silly call, figuring, of course, that what I said was true. He came over, picked me up, and put me into the bed. Then I said I was fine, and wanted to sleep, and he left.
Seven hours later, my other son returned home from hight school to find me in the bed. Later, we deduced I had not arisin all day. Apparently at that time my son questioned me and realized something was very wrong, called his brother and together they took me to the hospital. This and the emergency room are a blur of images and pain. All I remember is people talking about me, but I did not really care.
They would wheel me for x-rays, an MRI, EKG, an IV other things. Blood was drawn more than once.
I remember them telling me or someone I was in kidney failure. There were other things too, but I could not understand. Mostly, I wanted to sleep.
The next day, I remember my father and brother were there from Chicago. This was strange, but I knew I was sick (I was in hospital, after all) and was very happy to see them. My sons fiance, Manuela, came to my bed and showed me some blood test results. I must have asked why I was there. I said that those were dangerous results and she said I was lucky to be alive.
They asked me what year it was and I said 1957. They kept asking me this until I became annoyed, and they asked who was president and I said Clinton. I was mad everyone was making such a big deal. There was also a trememdous amount of physical pain, every time I moved. I would scream every time they moved my arms or legs. That is all I remember of the pain, but they remember it, with horror.
I cannot explain how it feels to see the intense fear and horror you have caused to those you love. I did not mean to have such pain, I did not intend to almost die and did not want to hurt them or make them sad.
This was the beginning of my adventure. Slowly I became aware of strange neurological changes, and, upon transferring to the rehab hospital, the many changes would unfold amid my confusion.
