do you know that smell of
rain
that comes only in the spring?

Too many new leaves
all wanting light.

On the way to the mailbox
after the deluge,
I left behind two puddles
and wet footsteps.

Left behind the trees
and the swollen stream behind the house
rushing

when the broken dam
that has been my heart
all these years collapsed

a broken twig
beneath my sister's hoof
snapped
in-whose-woods
are-these?
without a sound.
