flight

The flight back home to Phoenix
afforded me a dangerous amount of time to think
about how we never tamed the sky, just compromised with it

..about the familiarity of the driving rain
when we landed in Philly four days ago
and how it felt, after three years,
like I was just there

..about how the clouds outside my window
seemed to be saying a much too long goodbye,
so still and close,
though we were moving west at bullet speed

..about how Philadelphia is an old city
with real history
and generations of true blue Eagles and Phillies fans
who bleed green in winter and red in spring

..about my favorite Uncle Joe in South Jersey
who has become zenlike and philosophical in retirement
and wants to spend the rest of his life
feeding the ducks and caring for his cat
and little else

..about my other Uncle Russ,
whose cancer meds make him sleep all day
and stay up all night thinking about death

..about how great it is
to never worry about sump pumps
and dirty gutters
and pollen and ragweed
and gypsy moths
and parkway tolls

..about how the Navajo weaves
hanging in the terminal at Sky Harbor
were commercially spun

..about how the saguaros in my new city
have such shallow roots,
just like me

..about the city I love,

and how I am still wondering which one it is
