maryanns's recent Blog entry. 'Twas a Four Raccoon Afternoon... ( 331 reads) Thursday, November 12, 2009 (05:31:00)

While this may not be the best poem I ever wrote, I think the subject matter and action make it worth posting.

'Twas a Four Raccoon Afternoon

I was enjoying the sunshine and warmth out in the yard
after several overcast days of rain and fog
when I noticed several furry faces in the willow trees
peering out at me.

Cute little black and white masks, well after ghost night
came and went around these parts so dark
that not one single creature came crying trick or treat
without a flashlight.

Faces resumed peering at me when I returned with food,
the cat food bowl kept in the laundry room.
I got a couple of strange looks from my kitty friends
as I bypassed them.

Back in the yard I held the bowl up high, making sounds
of crunchy food pellets. Raccoon came down
one by one to survey the scene, on hind legs standing
around like cartoons.

Then they all came up for bites of kibble in pecking order
large to small and smaller still, slightly bolder
as the hungry line of animals wanting food came closer
to aromas of supper.

Very soon it became clear the little coon was not allowed
to poke its tiny nose between bigger brethren.
I tried putting out more food, gradually spread it wider.
The little guy ran off.

They finished up the final morsel, scuffling and growling
like a gang of unruly children. One was biting
while another sneak attacked, reaching out devouring
the last of their meal.

They started to advance on me, sitting by the picnic table.
I stood up and took the half-empty food bowl
inside, before they all decided they could take me out
in a four coon minute.

I enjoyed reading this poem. It depicts life as it is. You can't go anywhere without having to listen to a phone conversation about something you don't care to hear. I honor our soldiers and our vets. I will return to read more of your poetry.

This poem was written about a very broken person.
She is hardly certain and entirely insecure, with many frustrations. She vents them.
She has regrets. Regrets of words as weapons. She chews them apart.
There is some irony in the use of the word "dream", instead of nightmare.

She falls often, and from great distances. But all the while, she keeps her hands towards the sky.
She looks everywhere for answers, desperate, even attempting to hear the earth speak of them.
She looks to love for assistance, so she keeps her heart readily accessible, prepared to lend it to whoever might need it most.
There is no one to make her happy, she tries to be selfless.
        And still, she feels worthless.

She even hurts herself out of frustration.
She dives, the solid ground as her target.
The empty feelings that she contains make it swift and easy for her to self-inflict pain.

She insists on being fake, prosthetic.
She has lost so much, she is afraid that being real will result in the loss of it all.
She has become careless, unaware of the feelings of others.
She wrenches up the roots of a foundation that is not her own.

Her heart is empty, she turns to her thoughts, her brain, to numb the feeling of worthlessness.
She is close enough to insanity to outwardly express it.

She is beautiful, I love her, but I mean nothing.

My helplessness turned to anger, and I wrote this poem.
Almost as if ... mocking ... this lovely person.

        She is very, very broken.

I appreciate your interest in my poetry.
        Very much.

Sound advice mary ann- ignorance is only bliss to those that would have us living in it. I commend you on your stance to stand against those that would lead us to war while they hide behind a flag of that was supposed to represent freedom. I commend the many brave individuals that fight for what they believe is right and I only pray that the soldiers and civilians may meet someday to put an end to the tyranny of unscrupulous world leaders. VFP and IVAW to me represent the unvanquishible strength of those with the courage to stand up to injustice.
One day we will no longer be divided by their lies and our truth will cleanse the world of their travesties. Peace to you my friend- a pleasure to read your words, much love, spence
