I'm Gonna Be a Marine
Dad,
I want you to know
I'm gonna be fine
so please don't go
raising cane
down at the recruiting station
Hey,
It's gonna be alright
ill be home
in no time
at all
It'll be like I was never gone
and-
make sure you tell mama
to send letters every week
just don't write a book
Cause I won't have time to read
can you tell sis
imma miss her silly laugh
I don't know
what I'm gonna do
not having my best friend around
oh one more thing
can you make sure
Gurley doesn't sit
by the door
not knowing
i won't be walking in
And I need you
to promise me
you won't try
to stop me
from going overseas
chasing my big dream
I love you dad
but I'm gonna be a Marine
You know they say
It ain't that bad
I heard the food sucks
But I can live with that
For the time being
Since we're talking
Since this is man-to-man
I'm gonna be honest
I'm scared half to death
But I'll get over it
I hope I get over it
Just-
make sure you tell mama
to send letters every week
I don't mind if she writes a book
I'll just have to make time to read
can you tell sis
imma miss our little talks
I don't know
what I'm gonna do
When I got a problem I can't solve
oh one more thing
can you make sure
Gurley doesn't sit
by the door
not knowing
I won't be walking in
And I need you
to promise me
you won't try
to stop me
from going overseas
chasing my big dream
I love you dad
but I'm gonna be a Marine
You tell me
All the time
Son what are you
Doing with your life
Well I made up my mind
make sure you tell mama
to send letters every week
I don't mind if she writes a book
I'll just have to make time to read
can you tell sis
imma miss our little talks
I don't know
what I'm gonna do
When I got a problem I can't solve
oh one more thing
can you make sure
Gurley doesn't sit
by the door
not knowing
I won't be walking in
And I need you
to promise me
You'll be there
To support me
Whatever I decide
I want to be
I love you dad
And I want to be
Yea I want to be a Marine
I'm gonna be a Marine
About this poem
When you have to have that man-to-man talk with your dad, it can feel like the hardest thing you ever have to do, especially if it is to tell him youre about to get on a plane that is taking you thousands of miles away.
