Why Don't You Love Me

Robert Rowe 1967 (Agana, Guam)

No matter how hard I had tried
And the countless tears I had cried
You didn’t care and my heart died

When my love for you I would blurt
You didn’t care how much it hurt
It was an issue you would skirt

The mental torture you dished out
Let me know what you were about
And now with me you have no clout

You didn’t see my eyes were haunted
‘Cause I never knew what you wanted
This power over me you flaunted

So I created this prison cell
You and I both knowing good and well
The reason for my self-imposed hell

In all my life I just could not see
Why is it this way; why must it be?
Explain to me; why don’t you love me?

The gifts and the wealth don’t mean anything
The people you know don’t make you a king
Only your love makes my broken heart sing

My heart longs for your arm’s loving embrace
As no one else can ever take your place
Yet for your love you always make me chase

In my heart you’ll always be number one
You just can’t fathom I love you a ton
Tell me father, how can’t you love your son?

About this poem

Written about my estranged relationship with my biodad. He was a real jerk.
