The king dances naked in the city center
Prancing at the ka-ka -ka-ka, pap-pap and boom sounds
of rifles and missiles!
Joined in a massacre jig by allies…
Hopping unceremoniously to the tune of war!
Tone deaf to the cries and shouts for a ceasefire…
Refusing the slow crawling sway of the melody of peace
He tiptoes, like a drunkard on the verge of insanity
Spilling innocent blood from a gilded cup on the dance floor
He continues in a whirl of ethnic cleansing…
aware the world court, a lackey
Of the ruling council barks with no power to bite!
So he goes on a macabre dance of genocide,
Shutting off the songs of human rights abuses.
Who can stop this sporadic dance of killings?
Who can end this fast, wide movement to avenge every life,
When percussionists beat the drumroll of terror
Loudly chanting “finish them all” with their bombs?
About this poem
The poem is a poignant and scathing commentary on the destructiveness of war and the failures of global institutions to prevent atrocities. Through vivid imagery, it calls on readers to recognize and challenge the forces that perpetuate violence and to seek justice for those who suffer under tyrannical rule.
