Inside The Eyes
John Jessup Kennan 1953 (Pomona)
I only walk on water
When I miss the urinal
In tap shoes made for dancing
On the sea
Sometimes it's hard to focus
The irony of heavy feet
Amidst this noise
Called synchronicity
All this talk about the weather
You say it's gonna rain
But I have gotten wet before
And managed somehow to survive
The thing that really kills me
When I walk out my door
Is everyday people
Living ordinary lives
I was peeking through the out of place
Looking for some saving grace
Laughter dances like a flame
Inside the eyes inside your face
Benjamin's out running hard
Running fast and running scared
I hear the echo in my mind
I hear it everywhere
It echoes like a gas chamber
Resounds like an electric chair
From behind the self-built prison walls
Fear constructed there
How can I accept your harmony
With all this warfare in the air?
Flaming angels fall like stars
On desecrated deserts everywhere
If I could scale your wall like Spiderman
What good would it do?
I know how to love you
If you'll only let me through
I was peeking through the out of place
Looking for some saving grace
Laughter dances like a flame
Inside the eyes inside your face
Sometimes I lose my balance
Stumble on the path
With scorpions and serpents
In the call of nature's wrath
All this talk about believing
What am I praying for?
Am I asking for redemption
Or just settling a score?
So don't bother getting up
I can find my own way off the wall
Gonna take myself out dancing
On the water now, it calls
Till there are no fallen angels
Desecrating their deserted place
Their flaming laughter dancing
In the eyes inside their out of place
No more peeking from the out of place
Looking for some saving grace
Just laughter dancing like a flame
Inside the eyes inside your face
