My Long Distance Call
Shawn Dowell 1980 (Taledo, Oh)
I called God on the phone, I said, "Lord, there's something wrong.
But, before I could say another word, I heard his voice say, "My child, I've heard."
I've heard your cries, I've seen your tears, and I've felt the pain in all your prayers.
But, if you look back throughout your years, you'll see that I was always there.
When you felt helpless, alone and scared. I comforted you because I care.
But I interrupted God, and I started to cry, and as the tears fell from my eyes.
I said "Lord, then tell me why, did I have to live that kind of life?
Why do I feel this pain inside? And why do the tears fall from my eyes?
"Tell me Lord, what did I do, to have to go through what I've been through?"
But the Lord said, "My son, now stop right there, I know why you called and I've heard all your prayers.
And I know the path you walk along, but you'll never walk that path alone.
For I've been there to see you through. But, I can not tell you what to do.
The choices I give, for you to make, and the path you walk, is your choice to take.
All I can do is guide you through, but, only if you ask me to.
Give to me your hopes and fears, and let me burden all your cares.
Then you truly will be free, I'll live with you, and you with me.
So I said, "Lord, what can I do? How can I ask this thing of you?" After all the things I've done, how can you still call me your son?"
The Lord replied, " Have no fear." "My child," he said. "I'm always here."
"The greatest price, for I have paid. For all your sins, my life I gave"
So invite me in your heart to live, and eternal life to you I give.
Then the Lord hung up the phone, and left me standing all alone.
Asking God to lead me home, and guide me back if I should roam.
To you my Lord, I swear this day, to always give you thanks and praise.
To always let you lead my way, and ask forgiveness if I stray.
Thank you Lord, for everyday. All of this, I do pray.
Then from the heavens I heard God cry. "Thanks for calling, call back anytime."
