Expectations
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
If people are not living,
To achieve expectations...
Others feel they should attempt,
With effort to endeavor.
As if to seek their approval.
Yet successfully surpass,
Expectations they had for themselves.
Should or would what has been achieved,
And accomplished...
Disappoint the one,
Doing this done to hear it said...
How much better their success to notice,
Could have been.
If they had chosen something different,
More relatable to those expectations...
Others believed were quicker to assess,
By critics prepared...
With their negative comments to make.
'Why on God's Earth,
Did you not tell anyone about this?!'
'I apologize.
Now...
Tell me what I am apologizing for?'
'For doing something we did not expect.
And...
Behind our backs,
Got attention for doing it too!'
'Wow!
What a disappointment.'
'You can say that again.'
'Wow!
What a disappointment.
And all this time,
I was minding my own business...
Not one of your noses,
Did I feel up my behind.
That's talent!
It takes a magician to do that.
And...
Not be noticed to be that close doing it?'
'Your sarcasm,
Or cynicism...
Whichever is to be expected.'
'Well...
At least that leaves,
One of us less disappointed.
I'm serious about that 'nose' thing you do.
That's talent.
Raw!
But undeniably magical.
Who knows...
You could become,
Professional busy bodies.
And no one..
Not a soul would detect,
How far up in their butts you can get!'
'You are disgusting and appalling.'
'There you go.
Trying your best to get me to return,
A compliment.
Nope.
Not gonna do it!
