BLACK
Viresh Bhatnagar 1968 (Delhi)
When I was born, I heard a lot of voices
Mesmerised, I looked around towards the voices.
So many voices I heard around me,
Sometimes loving, sometimes angry surrounded me.
To understand I stretched to feel,
Sometimes hot, sometime cold and sometimes pain I would feel.
While growing I tried walking but fell,
Around me in the environment I tried to gel.
I got up, tried to run though fell on many things,
Every bruise and pain to myself stings.
Holding hands, I took my lively steps,
Those hands protected me with no more trips.
Comforting was the warmth of caring hands,
Gave me courage to explore life’s new lands.
Growing up I struggled to keep up the pace
Confused my thoughts, lost in a haze.
Confined to my room I would always wonder
Scared my wits whenever there was rain and thunder.
People said the world is full of colour,
For some reason, black was always my colour.
God, they said you are very kind,
Tell me, what was my fault, why did you make me blind?
