The Wreck
Come to me now and honestly say
What truly happened that dreadful day?
What do you remember tell me now…
I need to know how you got out
Ive heard the stories, read reports
Only you know, don’t cut it short
I looked at my aunt and sadly said
You really don’t want to know all this
She gazed at me and said with a smile
You’ve held it in for quite a while
Tell me now what happened that day
Don’t hold back and honestly say
What you remember, please tell me now…
I need to know how you got out
I look at my feet and sigh just a bit
Recover my strength and slowly sit
What happened that day I begin my story
Is a little gruesome, a little gory
My mom and my dad were driving us home
A wonderful trip, but we should have flown
See there was a guy driving too
Who drank a beer, maybe a few
He also had a massive high
Going on from drugs that he tried
Got in a car and tried to drive home
And this is why we should have flown
He hit a wall and flew in the air
Just our luck, we were right there
His car landed on top of ours
Who would have guessed life’s so short
My dad and brother were killed in a flash
Mom and I suffered the back lash
See the roof it collapsed and trapped us inside
2 dead bodies and that one drunken guy
He flew through a window and lost his head
And through all these memories all I have said
Is yes I remember what happened that day
And no you don’t want me to recount it this way
See the drunk driver lost his life
Taking a husband from his wife
A son from his momma and sister he loved
Leaving two people asking God above
Why did he let me live to see
The chaos and carnage drinking will bring
I watched the bodies pile up
Nothing I could do, because I was stuck
But these two arms reached inside
Grabbed my body and pulled me outside
I swear it was my daddy saving me
But everyone said, including police
I flew from the car upon impact
No my daddy couldn’t save me like that
See he had died immediately
So what I remember couldn’t be
but what I can say with truth in the hand
is drinking and driving caused the damage
I’ll never know my dad or brother
And never know my true mother
The wreck that stole them straight from me
Hurt my mother permanently
Left me with scars deep in my heart
And nightmares that sleep will always start
About this poem
I was asked once by my aunt what I could remember from the car wreck that killed my family. I wrote her this poem to explain what I was willing to say.
