The Betrayal
Nkem Joseph-Palmer 1974 (Kaduna)
In my Gethsemane, dewdrops do not see the sunlight
Although I reached beyond the watery void to improve my sight;
Faint shapes danced like drunken dervishes; not there, yet slight.
It is my desire for you that sings that song, not I, not I...
Backed by reckless drumbeats that thread footsteps, to aid flailing arms reach the light.
Beckon to me beyond my might...
Please...
In my Gethsemane, I fold arms.
About this poem
The intersectionality between desire, acceptance, love and rejection is at thr heart of human interaction with nature and humanity. The place of betrayal occurs when the heart desires even though the head knows better and rejection lurks in the corner...
