Digging for Treasure...
Linda Garfield 1944 (Woking)
I worked in the garden, digging here and there,
looking for treasures buried neath the soil for care,
of a sudden, I found it, in a plastic bag,
I unearthed a treasure and began to gag.
What I found was bizarre, a roll of film to boot,
what should I do with it, for a camera a person did shoot,
pictures of I know not what, its time to develop,
so I put it in a packet, then placed it in an envelope.
Days passed and I waited, my nerves were strictly on edge,
what were the photos of? I ask as I lean upon the ledge,
I open up the packet and pulled the photos out,
I was so amazed, that I began to shout.
The first was of a fire, a forest was ablaze,
people were running, as though they were crazed,
a house on the edge, wood, burning bright,
I looked at it in horror, for it gave me such a fright.
Then I passed to the next photo, and a person was in flames,
I started to cry, for it was clear he was not to blame,
the horror of the scene sent chills down my spine,
then hunger hit me, and I went in to dine.
I worked through the photos as I ate my meal,
hiding the horrors, in a pocket to conceal,
until I came to the last, a photo of a bright new dawning,
the area was cleared, and new buildings were at the break of morning.
