Masquerade
Sophia Onyeugbo 1982 (Clarksville, Arkansas)
This masquerade we play, oh how I used to love the game
The thrill of cat and mouse, the anticipation of the next level
However, since time has passed this game is no longer alluring
It’s old, it’s demeaning on so many levels, and it’s just not for me.
Perhaps you will find another to dance with you in hell
I am choosing to dance with myself in the rain
Free from all your pain and my sanity in return I shall gain
This masquerade we played, oh how I sometimes miss the game
Every now and then I cringe when I hear your name
And wonder if I ever cross your mind the same
Are you still dancing in hell in the dark?
Are you still pulling the cords to another’s heart?
Trust me when I utter the words “I miss you” because I truly do
I just couldn’t bare another night in hell
I wrapped around your finger twirling to your spell
This masquerade I play with myself, is beginning to take a toll on my health
I’m in agony without you
I miss us dancing in hell in the dark
I lie awake at night and pray another hasn’t stolen your heart
I wish I was anticipating the next touch of your embrace
The way you looked at me and would feverishly grab my face
Your voice in my ears, your legs intertwined with mine
How can I miss someone so much to the point of no return?
Reality hits me as you knock on the door, the joke is on me
You waltz in, darkness falls, and you grab my waist as you weave your spell
This masquerade we’re playing oh how I’ve missed you so
Dancing in hell in the dark is the only happiness I’ve ever known
