The Dark
Her heart is spent.
exhausted.
all the remaining drops of love wrung out and twisted
until all that remains is a dry husk,
ripe to be used as kindling for all the world's sorrows.
Her sorrows are crippling.
debilitating.
slashing at the meat of her person
until the wail leaves her blood red lips,
the keen she'd been holding in streaking past
with the speed of a thousand lights.
Her light is diminishing.
fading.
twinkling and sputtering,
saying an unsteady goodbye
while the fear claws at her throat,
and she’s left with a gaping emptiness
that cannot hold back the dark.
The dark is here
and she has nothing left.
The dark is here
and she is no more.
About this poem
This poem seeks to provide an honest depiction of what it's like to suffer through the horrors of depression. It's raw and unpretentious, with no sugar coating to ease the swallow, because that's what depresssion is. And while there *is* life at the end of the tunnel, when it has you in its grips, it's very hard to see that. It feels like drowning through darkness that never ends. Studies show that women are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression, and yet are also more likely to have their suffering ignored and blamed on other factors. But depression is real and painful, and more people need to know what it's like, and why they should care to help the people in their lives who fighting through it. This is my own way of trying to show that. more »
