The Disentanglement: A Sonnet of Self-Realization
Thy thoughts are not thyself, this truth doth hold,
For thou art observer, not the thing observed,
To separate the two, as truth doth unfold,
Is key to peace, and to be truly served.
Thy musings come and go, as clouds in sky,
But thou remain, the witness to it all,
To see this truth, and let go, is to fly,
Above the storm, and to rise above the squall.
The more thou comprehend, the non-veracity,
Of thoughts, the easier it shall become,
To disassociate, and gain clarity,
And find the peace, that thou hast longed for some.
So let go, and find the self, that's truly thine,
And leave the thoughts, that only bring turmoil to thine mind.
About this poem
This sonnet, written in complex and elevated language, explores the idea that our thoughts are not synonymous with our true selves. The speaker encourages the reader to separate themselves from their thoughts, recognizing that they are simply the observer of their thoughts and not the thoughts themselves. The more one comes to understand the non-veracity of their thoughts, the easier it will be for them to detach themselves from them and find peace. The sonnet also uses imagery of clouds and storms to further illustrate the fleeting nature of thoughts, compared to the unchanging self that observes them. The sonnet concludes with the message to let go of negative thoughts and find one's true self. more »
