Death Odessey

I awake from my slumber to a sea of darkness so thick that I couldn't see right in front of me. The only way to know for certain this location was the wood underneath my bum and the sound of water parting for the hull of the ship.

Flashes of a dream called life blipped into my mind where the screams of both thunder and man echoed. It became clear to me that I have died and this is where all sailors end up when dead. I try to call out to anyone but no words would escape my lips as if they didn't want to come. I fear to sleep for what lurks in this realm is untold.

All seemed hopeless as the ship moved more for what felt like an eternity passing in a single second until a bright glowing pure white light rises from the horizon it seemed so far but it felt so comforting. Maybe it wasn't so bad to sleep here until the journey's end.

About this poem

I wrote this poem when I was on a ship and looked at the horizon while contemplating mortality with a friend, and this concept just stuck with me.
