Rex
Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)
Rex and I had our differences
But respect was always there.
We'd run into each other at the bar sometimes.
Occasionally things would get messy,
A misunderstanding or a wrong look.
She smiled at me instead of him,
And the brawl would begin.
Rex would stand and watch,
Never interfering, just observing.
"I'll never fight for you," he declared.
I understood his stance.
Patriotism burned bright within Rex,
And he became a Marine.
Off to the Middle East he went,
Only to return in body, not soul.
He died fighting for us,
Fighting for me.
I believe he would have fought for me again.
Rest in peace, Rex.
I can't say for sure if there's a heaven,
But I hope you're at that bar
Looking at any girl you want,
And her man could care less.
