King

Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)

The barstool is my throne
The bottle my scepter
I sit and drink and ponder
Life’s many injustices

The job I hate
The bills I can’t pay
The women who won’t stay
All haunt my mind

But in the dim light of this bar
I am king
Pour me another drink
Let me forget it all

The bartender knows me by name
I tip him well
He pours me another
And I drink to forget

Outside, the world buzzes on
But in here, it’s just me and my drink
The bitter taste fills my mouth
And I savor it

This is my escape
This is my life
I am King
And this bar is my palace.
