Buried Away
Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)
As the nights wore on,
The dread only grew.
The shadows danced
Tauntingly around her,
Their tendrils reaching out
And twining themselves
Around her sanity.
Nightmares and night terrors
Plagued her,
Leaving her gasping for breath
And drenched in sweat.
She couldn't control them
And couldn't understand
Why they were happening
Now.
The question
Kept nagging at her:
Was she losing her mind?
Was the past
Finally catching up with her?
Her heart raced
As she wondered
If all those years
Of locking her memories
Away
Were finally taking their toll.
She couldn't shake the feeling
That she was caught
In a nightmare
That she couldn't escape,
That the demons lurking
Within her mind
Were finally
Clawing their way out.
With every passing day,
She felt more
And more
That her grip on reality
Was slipping.
It was like trying to hold onto sand;
The harder she tried,
The more it slipped through her fingers.
Was it all in her head,
Just a psychological reaction
To the horrors
She'd buried away for so long?
Or was it something
Much worse?
As the panic set in,
She grasped
With any semblance
Of control she could find,
Clinging to routine
And familiarity.
But even that was slipping away,
Leaving her drowning
In a sea of uncertainty and fear.
She didn't know how much longer
She could hold on,
How much more she could endure.
The nightmares and night terrors
Were becoming more intense,
More relentless,
And she began to wonder
If there was any escape
From the darkness
That had consumed her.
Her mind was racing,
A never-ending cycle
Of questions and doubts,
Leaving her feeling
Trapped and helpless.
For now,
She could only hold on
And wait,
Hoping that somehow,
Someway,
She could find a way
To hold onto her sanity
Before it was too late.
