Those Mystifying Myths
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
Yet to have I met to meet,
Anyone known to know...
Where those mysterious mystifying myths,
Generate to begin.
As historic tales told.
Capturing the imaginations,
To remain that way in minds for generations.
Like a rabbits foot,
Brings good luck.
To those claiming a rabbit caught to catch.
Stopped hopping along,
And sat patiently to have its foot severed.
With requests taken to give up,
Either the right or left foot.
Or a turkey preparing to dress,
In top hat and tails.
Prancing around on somebody's farm.
Hoping to become butchered.
Then selected as the best looking turkey.
Without a head or feathers left.
To address such attractive pultritude.
Where do these myths begin to start?
I remember as a child,
And in the midst of a snow storm.
My mother discovered me,
Outside butt naked attempting to make...
Wings as if an angel.
When I heard her scream,
I knew then my angel to impress...
Did nothing to address her spanking my butt.
To tell me,
I had not been an angel.
And the she showed me how she felt.
By covering me fully dressed.
Disabling my arms to move.
And sat me down to make herself,
A snowball.
Then to put that snowball in my mitten hands,
As if this would leave me feeling impressed,
With attempts to help me make...
A naked white snowman.
Who she claimed without wings,
I should make believe it could fly.
To this very day,
When Winter comes with warnings of snow.
The only time I leave where I now live,
Is to shovel as much of it as I can.
Letting go of every myth.
To remember as a child,
Myths to believe in them...
Are created just to keep the minds of people,
Distracted long enough to remember...
And not forget,
Reality to pay for it...
Requires not myths to live them.
But money from somewhere to get it.
To pay for debts kept,
Trying to keep up with appearances fictioned.
By the ones too happy,
Knowing what they've created...
Will have many addicted.
For the rest of their lives to reminisce,
With the assistance of pictures taken.
As evidence to prove,
How foolish kept beliefs can haunt...
Memories unable to leave behind.
'Oh...
Here's another picture.
Look at this one.
Isn't that you at night,
Staring at the sky.
Awaiting for a falling star to wish to see,
A cow jump over the Moon?'
'Um...uh...
I was just a child then.'
'Lies.
On the back of the picture,
Someone wrote,
Awaiting for dreams to come true.
No star or cow.
High school.
Two weeks before graduating.'
'That was a joke a friend of mine wrote.'
'Really?
Then...
Why are your fingers crossed.
Behind your back?'
