Mystery
As he looked out the window every morning,
I often wondered what stammered through his feeble mind…
Was he afraid for himself for the first time in his life?
Was he wondering what he could’ve done differently?
What about the what ifs?
Did he have secrets he wanted to confess?
Did he have last minute bucket list items he wanted to accomplish?
It doesn’t matter now.
Time has passed and he is gone.
What went on in his mind will remain a mystery, but one thing is for certain…
As I put my humbled grandfather to bed every night,
These words echo, still, to this day:
“Good night, sweetheart, I love you too.”
