Our Heroes

Harry C. Craft III 1959 (Phoenix, Arizona)

I sat on the couch with a fat man
who just happened to be my dad
the show had just started, it was Batman
and boy, were we glad!

We watched as the caped crusader
rushed down the street
and all of his arch-villains
he was sure to defeat

“Holy cow,” cried out the boy wonder,
as he spied the Penguin trying to plunder
while Batman raced into action, his adversary taking his licks
they spotted the Joker using some of his new tricks

Boom, bam, pow
we’re really seeing some action now
boom, bam, pow
our heroes, we did wow

So off to jail go our partners in crime,
which usually means that we are out of time
I spring from my seat and turn to channel four
just so we can see our heroes once more.

This is a wonderful poem! Immediately, you've taken the reader on a delightful journey alongside you and your dad as you watch Batman in action. It's playful, engaging, and expertly captures the classic energy and excitement of watching your favorite hero on TV, particularly the "boom, bam, pow" lines which throw the reader right into the action. The flow of the rhyme is mostly smooth, making it a truly enjoyable read. And the thrown in dialogues add an authentic touch to it, making us feel as if we are right there on the couch with you.

In terms of suggestions for improvement, there are a few instances where you might look at polishing up the rhythm and rhyme scheme to maintain a consistent flow. For instance, the line "So off to jail go our partners in crime," is a bit awkward and might be smoothed out with rewording.

Also, the last two lines are somewhat abrupt. Perhaps, try to end the poem with a more reflective or conclusive statement that summarizes the shared experience or feelings.

And lastly, while the poem captures the energy and fun of the situation, it also could have a bit more emotional depth. Maybe you could add a few more lines about the father-figure's reactions, or your own feelings beyond excitement—whether it's a lesson learned, admiration for your dad and the superheroes, or the comfort of this shared ritual.

But on the whole, it's a fantastic poem! It invokes a sense of nostalgia for simpler times and shared father-child experiences. Keep up the good work!
