What Is A Mother

Deborah Sturman 1970 (Brooklyn, NY)

You taught me how to walk
You taught me how to talk
You wiped away my tears
You chased away my fears

If I fell you’d help me up
Telling me to never give up
You always went out of your way
Listened when I had a bad day

In my darkest hour
You alone had the power
And helped me see the light
Somehow making it alright

Mom, the bond we share
Nothing can compare
The love you always showed
The joy that always flowed

Walking down the path of motherhood now
I’m so grateful I had you to show me how
For me there could have been no other
Thank you for being my mother

About this poem

When my mother passed away, I wrote this poem to describe the kind of mother she was and what she taught me throughout the years. I wanted her to know how she helped shape me into the kind of mother I became.
