Disregard the Message read

Reject the past, our noxious past,
for with regret it does follow.
Reject it all, embrace it not,
for it will but leave you hollow.

It has been said, it has been done,
but still you feel compelled.
Compelled to what? You do not know,
and the seeds of doubt you sow.

So distance yourself, move back more
for I remember what you swore:
Never to love, never to kneel,
forever to feel only scorn.

So reject the past, your noxious past.
Reject the Message read.
For you must remember,
she was just a stranger, a mere pretender.
Nothing of the splendour said.

About this poem

This poem reflects on the theme of rejecting a problematic or regretful past. It begins by urging the reader to distance themselves from a past filled with regret, warning that holding onto it can lead to a sense of emptiness. The speaker notes that despite the past being acknowledged and actions taken, there's a lingering compulsion that introduces doubt. The third stanza revisits the rejection of the past, emphasizing vows made to avoid love and subservience, choosing instead to harbour feelings of scorn. The poem concludes with a reminder to reject a certain message that might romanticize or misrepresent the past, particularly an individual characterized as a stranger and a pretender without the promised splendour. Overall, the poem explores themes of reflection, rejection, and the consequences of holding onto a regretful past.
