Deceitful eyes
They say eyes are the windows to the soul,
For a while I believed it too,
But then I saw a creature foul,
lifeless like a sculptor's besmirched statue,
Skin pale,
Hair all disheveled,
Face unconcealed but it seemed it were covered by a misty veil,
Something vile on it's face reveled.
It looked at me and drew nearer,
Floating like a ghost,
Now I could see it's face clearer,
I felt fear utmost,
I looked into it's eyes and saw nothing,
A black empty void,
In it's eyes I search for something,
Of everything it was devoid.
It seemed like a thing deathless,
I take a step back,
To my fear it laughs a laugh mirthless,
"What are you?" I ask,
It still has it's crooked smile,
"I'm you" It says,
"No, no, I'm not so empty and vile"
"Oh you're just as vile and empty as me" Again it says.
It laughs and laughs without mirth,
I fall to my knees and the creature gazes into my eyes,
When did my ardor become so dearth?
Does it see all the lies?
Or does it see all the sorrows concealed in plain sight?
Perhaps not.
It only sees a window of the night but no moonlight,
A life that knows only to rot
