The Crossroads

I walk alone,
On this unending road.
I tread in darkness,
Sunrise in sight, but never closer.

At a crossroads,
Blocking my path.
He greets me,
Hollow-eyed, draped in black.

He does not speak,
No emotion offered.
He stands and stares,
Holding his list of names.

He reads from his list,
He knows me,
Knows my deeds.
He reads for an eternity.

He steps aside,
Motions me by.
I continue onward,
Walking toward the sunrise.
