The Jacket
The Jacket 1973 (Chicago)
Forced to go to the Store
so a stranger can fit me for a Suit
It was stiff, uncomfortable, and expensive
Just like a kindergartener's Pursuit
When i Lost the Grand Adults in my life
was the next time I wore that prison
I was accompanied by more family this time
were we only spoke of religion
My last full 3 piece ensemble
was at the bitter age of fourteen
I dressed the part of a graduate
But still always felt unseen
The next Suit was in pieces
as it was all i could aquire
Working to find myself daily
was all that I really desired
The Jacket now remained solo
waiting for its day to be greeted
it stayed in the closet alone
till the event it would be needed
The meaning of the Jacket changed
with every year of a my Life
It showed itself once more
during the Love that is my wife
I now have more selection
over the style of that coat
it could now support me
in any position I promote
Until the Day unthinkable
That I would be forced to bear
the loss of my best friend
I'm sad, it hurts, it's unfair
My coat is nothing but a requirement
in this unreal ritualistic event
to keep socializing with people
as it hides my true discontent
The Jacket that matters most in my life
isn't anyone I've ever had
it now hugs the man I miss
the Hero I called Dad.
