Beauty

Alizay Hickman 2006 (Saskatchewan)

There’s beauty all around us

In the shining of the stars at night

In the flow of the river water trickling down the rocks

In the soft pink, orange, and purple of the sunset

And in the curves of the ocean waves

And I hope we can find it in the people around us

In the shining eyes of the ones we love

In the flow of locks draping down heads

In the soft tan and rich brown we see walking down the street

And in the curves of bodies all different from one another

Can we find it not only on the outside but in the souls and minds of others?

In the hearts shining with love

In the minds overflowing with misunderstood thoughts

In the soft and harsh laughs of joyous moments

And in the curves of the strings connecting one soul to another

About this poem

I wrote this poem sitting on a patio in Kauai, Hawaii after seeing the beautiful sunset against the ocean. I wrote the first stanza and from there it just flowed out of me.

I grew up on a cattle ranch near a small town in Saskatchewan. I've always loved music, the lyrics being one of my favourite parts, so I started writing my own. I am headed to my first year of college this fall. more…
