In this Town
In this town
The kids used to play, run through the woods
until mother rang the bell that meant supper
The calls and whistles were like gentle words
telling us what to explore next
we memorized our way
to the farm and back
and we always knew how to fall
out of the trees so we would not break a leg
it didnt always work
somtimes it was even an arm
In this town
we also learned about our big mouths
the funny thing is we all had them
But we learned how
far they would take us
we all remember
each of our birthdays
and the orange cake
as we sat in the backyard
which i swear was a part of the woods
we each tested ourselves
And our strenths and weaknesses
But hush, we never told
we made friends and enemies
and i remember the nice hot chocolate
mother made in winter
and how we skated on the frozen lake
but just wait till the sun went down
we pretended we were soldiers at war
the battler never ended
i always would gloat on how i won
In this town the kids run
but these kids who the town
belonged to are now all grown up
the woods are now just empty logs
but to these kids who ran
their spirits are still running
in this town we played
some say its no longer ours
but we jsut laugh and shake our heads
In this town
