Just A Smile
I am walking down the hall,
Surrounded by people but all alone.
Bright posters hang on the wall
I knew my feelings had never shown
I see you standing across the way,
And my head hangs down in shame.
I know there is barely a chance you may
Haven even ever heard my name.
Next thing I know, you are standing near.
You reach for my hand, and take it.
My heart immediately fills with fear,
For I cannot take another hit.
You look at me with kindest eyes,
There is no hate in them for me to see.
My mind, my heart is so suprised
That you did not have a harsh word for me.
"Friend, I see you struggling," you say.
"And I know just how that feels."
I look up at you, for the first time that day.
I see your loving smile and my spirit is forced to kneel.
"There was a time when I was alone,
No one cared about me, or so it felt."
You say, "But then just one
Person made my stoney heart melt."
"A simple smile saved my life,
And one dear thing is sure,
You either choose to hold the knife,
Or help a soul endure."
My friend, if you see a struggling soul,
Please just offer up a smile.
You can help what's broken once again be whole,
And that is worth the while.
